However, once my hair reaches its optimal moisture level, I can pretty much put anything in it and the product will work well. At that time, product choice becomes less important. There is one simple routine that I always return to when my low porosity hair gets a little or a lot dry, whether it is from summer heat, winter cold, indoor heating, flat-ironing, failed product experiments or poor hydration. That simple routine consists of clarifying my hair, doing the Double Conditioning Method, then applying warmed up leave-in conditioner to my hair. Afterwards, I follow a three day routine of adding warm H2O (distilled water) + warmed up leave-in conditioner to hair at night or morning then leaving a shower cap on for five minutes or length of shower (not the thin plastic conditioning caps). The shower cap helps create steam for my hair and allows product to fully absorb. At the end of the third day, if not the second day, my hair will be back to its optimal moisture level.
The product that currently helps my hair get to its optimal moisture level when it is dry is Kinky Curly Knot Today. I will admit that Knot Today is NOT the most moisturizing conditioner on its own, but that is why it helps my hair get to its optimal moisture level. I have amazing deep conditioners that I mentioned in my last post, but overusing any of those continuously leads me to over- conditioned, dull hair with buildup. That leads to moisture being blocked from my low porosity strands. Since my hair needs frequent access to moisture + water, buildup leads me to dry hair and then further dry hair when I need to clarify it all out. This has happened to me time and time again and I never understood why when I was using such rich, heavy moisturizing products. The Knot Today also has a minimal ingredient list with few non-essential additives, and little to no protein (the marshmallow root can act as a protein for some) so I do not have to worry about further drying out my hair with additives, protein or glycerin.
Sometimes we could be interfering with our hair's ability to retain moisture, when we respond to dry hair by overusing heavy products. At the end of the day product choice is important, but it can only work with the right method for your hair type.
