For this reason, I do not leave regular commercial conditioners in my hair as leave-ins, but only use them for rinse-out conditioning. I use conditioners specifically made to be left in instead, whether they are commercial or natural. I then layer those conditioners with moisturizing creams or conditioners specifically made with natural ingredients and for textured hair. These conditioners specifically made with natural ingredients and for textured hair make ideal leave-ins because the ingredients are multipurpose and moisture infusing. For example, ingredients like honey or olive oil included in natural brands are both detangling for my hair, but also moisturizing and nourishing when left in.
As such, my main leave-in of choice is the Kinky-Curly Knot Today applied with a natural and sealing moisturizer on top such as MyHoneyChild Sophia's Grease, Curl Junkie Curl Rehab Deep Treatment or Natures Gate Vitamin E Oil. The ph of the leave-in (ph 7) is not too low so it does not seal my hair, but allows more moisture to be absorbed afterwards. Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner is my second leave-in of choice as it contains squalane (olive oil lipids) coconut triglycerides (fatty acid), cetrimonium bromide (cationic surfactant/salt) and panthenol (humectant) which penetrate the cuticle layer, making it great for delivering lasting moisture to dry, low porosity hair. KeraCare Natural Textures leave-in is my third leave-in of choice that also doubles as a moisturizer because it contains oils and humectants. My Curl Cocktails post will describe in detail how I pair my leave-ins with sealers and stylers to get the best combinations for my low porosity type 4 hair.
L o l mETHOD: LEAVE-IN + OIL+ LEAVE-IN
STEP 1: LEAVE-IN
I use my favorite leave-in, Kinky-Curly Knot Today, to provide the first conditioning base and as I mentioned in previous posts, I apply all my conditioners to my low porosity hair warmed up. I prefer the Knot Today because it is ph 7 so it does not close my already tight low porosity cuticles and allows the leave-in to absorb. If you have high porosity or color-treated hair, you may want to use a lower ph leave-in like KeraCare Natural Textures leave-in.
STEP 2 & 3: MOISTURIZER & SECOND APPLICATION OF LEAVE-IN
I next add a moisturizer to seal in the first application of leave-in. I primarily use the MyHoneyChild Sophia's Hair Grease because it contains honey which is a humectant that draws moisture into my low porosity hair. I follow with the second layer of Knot Today leave-in to complete the LOL Method then style. Another moisturizer I use, mainly in the Winter when humectants are not good to use, is the Natures Gate Vitamin E Oil blend + rosemary essential oil. I like it because the vitamin E oil is viscous and softening like honey, but not humectant. I mix it with the Knot Today leave-in and apply them together as a second layer, rather than separately for more of an LO Method. A third option for me to layer over the Knot Today is the Curl Junkie Curl Rehab Deep Treatment, but for maximum moisture I usually layer it over my hair as a fourth step after the LOL Method is complete. I will discuss more of my favorite styler combos in my Curl Cocktails post.
