There is a trick I learned for getting the most of of conditioning when you have naturally dry hair, especially low porosity. Sometimes deep conditioning just won't cut it. So, when conditioning my hair, I always condition twice. Once, with a heavy conditioner, then again with a lighter conditioner. Why?
Well this may seem redundant to some people, but when you have naturally dry, kinky hair, conditioning effectively is the key to easier styling, moisture retention and minimized breakage.
I have noticed a distinct difference in my hair when I condition twice, as opposed to conditioning only once after cleansing. My hair is noticeably more pliable, detangled, defined and shinier. It is also easier to style, which as I mentioned, means less breakage in the long-run.
So, how does it work? Well, I use a combination of my favorite conditioners including the heavier Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm (Sally's Generic) and Camille Rose Coconut Water Treatment, paired with lighter conditioners like Giovanni 50:50 Balanced or Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat. I also make sure that I use at least one moisture- based conditioner like the Matrix or Curl Junkie so that I do not overload my hair with protein.
I then condition with the heavier conditioner, leave it in for at least 2-3 minutes, rinse it out, then apply the second conditioner and repeat. I've also used a heavier conditioner, then co-washed with a lighter conditioner for a similar effect. When doing a deep conditioning treatment, I follow the same steps except I leave the deep conditioner in for at least 10-15 minutes under a shower cap with steam/heat, then co-wash or re-condition with the lighter conditioner afterwards.
If you have naturally dry or low porosity hair, I encourage you to give this a try and share this trick with other kinky-haired gals!
